TikTok has jumped to the top of the app download and install market in the U.S. market, and has repeatedly topped the local App Store or Google Play charts in Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Germany, France, and Russia. According to the latest data from Sensor Tower in May 2020, the total number of downloads of Douyin and its overseas version of “TikTok” on the global App Store and Google Play app stores has exceeded 2 billion.
TikTok is a short video social platform owned by Douyin Group. Global headquarters are located in Los Angeles and Singapore, with offices in New York, London, Dublin, Paris, Berlin, Dubai, Jakarta, Seoul and Tokyo. Users can capture and present creative and important moments directly from their phones, and create and view short videos on TikTok. On April 30, 2021, ByteDance CFO Zhou Shouzi was appointed as the CEO of TikTok.
In 2016, TikTok was launched by ByteDance Group, initially promoted in the Chinese market under the name “Douyin”, and then went overseas in the second half of 2017 and changed its name to “TikTok” for the international market. TikTok has swept the world in a short period of time after its launch, and has repeatedly topped the App Store or GooglePlay in the United States, India, Germany, France, Japan, Indonesia and Russia. In 2021, the number of monthly active users of TikTok exceeded the 1 billion mark. The total number of downloads on the platform has exceeded 3 billion, covering more than 150 countries and regions around the world. In 2022, TikTok ranked first in the world with 672 million downloads, making it the most popular app in the world in 2022. As of March 2024, TikTok has reached 170 million U.S. users.
In August 2020, Trump issued an executive order prohibiting any American from conducting any transactions with TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, and the United States has continued to suppress TikTok. On March 13, 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass a bill requiring ByteDance to divest control of TikTok, otherwise TikTok will be banned in the United States. On March 13, 2024, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that the United States has never stopped suppressing TikTok in recent years, and this kind of bullying behavior that cannot win in fair competition will eventually backfire on the United States itself. On April 10, Maria Cantwell, chair of the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee, said that lawmakers may extend the deadline to force ByteDance to divest TikTok’s U.S. assets to one year.
